50 years of Friendship!
Last weekend I had the extreme pleasure of traveling with friends I have known for 50 years…still confused about how this is possible because I am only 29!

Did you ever go someplace you didn’t know existed and then end up finding a place you want to get to know better and spend more time? I just did!
We traveled to visit and support a friend who is pursuing her passion. She has had horses all her life but just recently decided to leave her job as a project manager to build a farm and develop a business helping horses to live better lives.
She has true compassion for these amazing animals and their owners.

Where else would you go to do this work with horses but Aiken, South Carolina!! Who knew?? Not me. It is the horse capital of the world…in my opinion. The way Lise, explained where she lived as “30 minutes to the local convenience store.” I thought OK… It will be a weekend with the girls so no work for me! Then my friend Debbie, who is always interested in exploring new places says “Do you guys want to do a trolley tour?” What? Wait? How can this place have a trolley tour…so I did a quick internet search and Whoa…Trolley tour here we come!!
How lucky am I, I can combine work, travel, and friends!! What an amazing life!

OH, I already said that 🙂

We arrived late and it was dark, REALLY DARK by the time we reached Aiken in our rental car. So dark in fact we couldn’t see the road the GPS was telling us to take. We disregarded thinking it was a mistake and ended up getting rerouted through a cemetery!!! SPOOOOOKY!!! Ok…does she really live out here??? I was certainly thinking…but within a few minutes and the help of the GPS, we found the dirt road to her farm. At least we thought we did?? Unsure we parked and looked for a way in since the gate was locked. Then we saw a light moving in the distance. It was Lise wearing a headlamp. I just LOVE IT!! Of course, when you are leading a horse coming and going from the barn you can’t hold a flashlight. Oh… the many things I will learn this weekend.
The next morning we woke to the view of Lise’s beautiful farm designed and orchestrated by her! I am so thoroughly impressed by my friend and her accomplishment.
After breakfast and tending to 4 horses, 3 dogs and of course a cat named LOUIE…we headed off to check out her new town and take the trolley tour. Let me just say…we felt young on the trolley tour. It began at the visitors center and train museum. But…if you like toy trains this is a must!
Aiken is named after William Aiken, president of the Railroad Company and one of South Carolina’s leading cotton merchants. In 1830 work began on a railroad from Charleston to Hamburg, South Carolina orchestrated by William Aiken allowing Aiken to become a place to retreat from the heat and escape the threat of malaria. After the war in 1870 Aiken began to attract wealthy Northerners, and the “winter colony” began.

As we toured around town and stopped over the weekend to meet Lise’s friends I was amazed by the amount of land devoted to horses, there were even roads in town unpaved to accommodate the horses. LOVE IT!!
We felt welcome everywhere we went and I LOOK forward to returning soon!!!
